Symmetry mediated tunable molecular magnetism on a 2D material

Abstract Symmetries in nanoscale structures can be decisive for their structural, electronic, and magnetic properties, particularly systems with reduced dimensions. Here we show that the symmetries of a flat metal-organic molecule adsorbed on transition metal dichalcogenide, 2-dimensional layered material, have dramatic effect total spin intramolecular spin-spin interactions. Using scanning probe microscope, find two different molecular states by modifying symmetry molecules via twist angle to substrate. Additionally, observe significant non-collinear Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction between electron spins induced spin-orbit coupling van der Waals coupled material broken inversion symmetry. Our work opens path exploiting studying nature surface-induced within single which might allow realization more complex topological structures.
